What year did the Great Trek start?

Good question to dig into! Rather than me telling you straight away, let's see what you already know. Do you have your notes or textbook nearby? Have a look in the section on the Great Trek and the Boer migration from the Cape Colony — what decade does it mention?

Hi there! Ready to carry on with the Great Trek question? Have a look in your textbook or notes under the section about the Voortrekkers leaving the Cape Colony — what year or decade do you see mentioned there?

Can you please give me a summary of the trek boers because my video didn’t teach me

I hear you, that's frustrating when the video doesn't cover it! Let's build the summary together instead, using what you might already know or can find quickly. First, let's get the terms sorted, because "Trekboers" and "Voortrekkers" aren't quite the same thing. The Trekboers were the earlier group — semi-nomadic Dutch farmers who moved into the interior of the Cape in the 1700s, mostly looking for more grazing land and freedom from strict company (VOC) control, before the British were even in charge. The Voortrekkers came later, in the 1830s, and they're the ones linked to the Great Trek away from British rule. So which one is your topic actually about — the earlier Trekboers, or the later Voortrekkers and the Great Trek? Once we know that, we can think about what they were unhappy about and why they moved. What does your work say?

The earlier trekboers

Good, that narrows it down nicely. Let's build this piece by piece with questions, rather than me just telling you. First: where did the Trekboers come from, and roughly when did they start moving away from that place? Does your textbook mention the Cape Colony and a rough time period, like the early-to-mid 1700s?
